Otto Talks The Return of the King

New Line Cinema has updated the official website for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with a new Miranda Otto video interview in which she talks about playing Eowyn, the White Lady of Rohan, in the trilogy. The clip includes the cast and crew talking about the character as well. You can check it out here, where you'll also find a written interview with Otto!

The site also has up a first look at the soundtrack composed, orchestrated and conducted by Academy Award-winner Howard Shore. Grammy winner Annie Lennox contributes to the soundtrack on the song "Into the West," and world-renowned musician Sir James Galway performs on several tracks. You can listen to the song and watch the making of the video here.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King opens on Wednesday, December 17.

Storyline:
Based upon the Tom Clancy novel of the same name, Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst, is thrust right in the middle of a power struggle within the Colombian drug cartel after one of the President's "life long" friends is murdered, apparently in retaliation for stealing money as part of a money laundering scheme for the cartel. Jack is then appointed acting Deputy Director of Intelligence, CIA, upon the terminal illness of Admiral James Greer, former DDI, and quickly gets in over his head due to his political naivete. The situation rapidly deteriorates when some of the presidents men convince the President to conduct covert actions against the cartel, in direct violation of congress. Felix Cortez, the security chief of Ernesto Escobeda, the "victim" of the missing money, is one of the cartel boss's. Cortez tries to play both sides, appearing to inform Escobeda about the CIA's involvement in the covert operations against him, while trying to orchestrate a coup to take over the cartel, with Cortez as it's sole boss. James Cutter, the President's National Security Advisor, makes his own deal with Cortez, with the Presidents knowledge, and halts communications to the covert troops still in Colombia, through the Deputy Director of Operations, CIA, Robert Ritter. Ryan ends up going to Colombia to rescue the covet ops troops with the help of field agent John Clark, but not before some fence mending between the two, being that Ritter blamed Ryan for the comm outage, with Clark's men subsequently being captured by Cortez's mercenaries.

The movie follows a guy who plays hooky from work only to have his plans for the day go all wrong. Moffet (Like Mike) said he will tune the script to Rock's brand of humor.

Moffet also wrote Ralph for Imagine. Eddie Murphy is eyeing the title role of a black man who wakes up one day in a world of only white people.

Willis & Rifkin Moving Forward on a Pair of New Pics

Arnold Rifkin's and Bruce Willis' Cheyenne Enterprises is fast-tracking a pair of pics, one in which Willis will produce and topline, and another that Cheyenne will only produce.

First up is a deal with Bob Yari and Mark Gordon's Stratus Film Co. to adapt the Robert Crais novel Hostage as a starring project for Willis. Notably, Stratus is guaranteeing the movie's budget despite it lacking domestic distribution. The film, which was first at MGM and then at Revolution Studios, will be directed by Florent Siri (The Nest).

Hostage tells the story of a LAPD hostage negotiator (Willis) who withdraws to the countryside to become chief of a two-man police department after a standoff ends bloodily. But instead of finding peace in the small town he finds himself embroiled negotiations to save his kidnapped wife and daughter.

The film will begin pre-production immediately and is set to go before cameras in January.

The other Cheyenne production, True Believers, is moving forward quickly at MGM, with the studio making a pay-or-play offer to Japanese horror helmer Hideo Nakata (Ringu), and readying an offer for Mark Wahlberg to star.

Underworld is set to become a trilogy for Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems. Screen Gems has made a deal for Danny McBride and Len Wiseman to write a sequel to the vampire and werewolf thriller, which Wiseman has said he would again direct.

Screen Gems and Lakeshore hope to put the second film into production as soon as possible. A third film, a prequel, could follow. No deal is in place for star Kate Beckinsale, though she has expressed interest in reprising her part.

The first film earned $21.8 million last weekend, Screen Gems' best opening for a film ever.

Enter the family horse, played by Cuba Gooding, Jr. He used to belong to a bounty hunter, and knows a great way to save the farm. Summary:
Clich�d and predictable, it's more like "Bore Creek Manor".

Story:
Cooper and Leah Tilson are tired of city life and decide to move with the kids into a repossessed mansion called Cold Creek Manor. The house is in poor shape, but Cooper and Leah are up to the task of renovating. Their new life is going well until Dale Massie, who used to live in the house, returns to claim what he believes is his.

Critique:
This supposed suspense thriller is a waste of talent, the studio's money and moviegoers money as well. Playing more like a TV movie of the week, not much is offered here. Touchstone has done a wonderful job of marketing the movie, however, with trailers and TV spots that make this look like an edge-of-your-seat kinda thriller. Unfortunately that's not the case.

Let's start with what "Cold Creek Manor" is missing. If you thought there were any supernatural elements to the movie (the trailer makes it seems so), there's none. If you thought there were twists and suprises in the story, nope, nothing. When you think you'll get an explanation as to why Dale Massie is wanting the house back and kill the current owners, you don't.

Mike Figgis directed, composed the music for, and produced "Cold Creek Manor". The talent he used to create such a masterpiece as "Leaving Las Vegas" is noticeably absent this time around. Perhaps it was the script he co-wrote with Richard Jefferies that made the film so uneventful. It takes a long time for anyhing really to get going. Regarding the music, the piano pieces that tried to evoke suspense were laughable at best.

The only points go to the acting, which in itself is not too bad. I'm actually surprised the cast signed onto this script. Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone are able to bring good chemistry to the screen and you're able to care for them. Stephen Dorff does a good job with what he gets to play with, though you never really understand what's going through his character's head. Panic Room star Kristen Stewart stands out as probably the best of the bunch in the film. Juliette Lewis plays her usual self, while Christopher Plummer is unrecognizable as Mr. Massie.

I really wanted to like "Cold Creek Manor" because of the actors involved, but in the end it's just another movie of the week.

Summary:
A feel good movie about how a high school football coach changed the life of mentally impaired James Robert 'Radio' Kennedy.

Story:
In 1976 Anderson, South Carolina, mentally challenged James Robert Kennedy was pretty much on his own every day as his mom worked long hours at a hospital. He would make frequent trips past the high school and see the football team practice. Coach Harold Jones invited him to help the team and started taking care of Radio, his nickname because of his love for music and his radio. Radio would become very involved with the sports programs and even sat in the Coach's class during the day. However, some townsfolk blamed Radio for distracting the football team and their so-so season, plus other incidents at the school made them believe what the Coach was doing was not right. Inspired by a true story, the film shows how Harold Jones and Radio changed the town forever.

Critique:
"Radio", from director Michael Tollin and writer Mike Rich, is a fictionalized story based on the true life of James Robert Kennedy. While some things in the movie are very "Hollywood", you get the general feeling that most of these events could have happened to the man. And although the film involves football, luckily we're not treated to the same old story about a losing team pulling it out in the last minute and winning the championship. This one's about the characters.

Of those characters, I was most impressed by Ed Harris' potrayal of the Coach. Although a bit more subdued in perhaps some of his other roles, Harris convinces that he truly cares about Radio and that we will do anything to keep him from being put away. I think the Oscars might look his way with yet another nomination (isn't it time he won one?!). Cuba Gooding Jr. was great as Radio, but a problem I had is that I just remembered too many of his previous roles. It was too hard to forget about Cuba, the actor, when seeing him play a mentally challenged person. For example, when I saw Leonardo DiCaprio for the first time in 1993's "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", I really believed in the acting because I hadn't seen his previous work. There's nothing wrong with Gooding's acting, it was just hard to get passed that.

Of the supporting cast, Alfre Woodard played a good principal, who cared for the kids but also about what's best for the school. Chris Mulkey works as the town 'baddie', as does newcomer Sarah Drew in her role as the daughter, Mary Helen Jones. I was expecting a bit more from Debra Winger, who plays the coach's wife. Her husband doesn't spend any time with the family and starts taking care of Radio instead. Though she seems to mind, there's not a whole lot of emotion there.

James Horner's music makes the scenes too sappy most of the time. The score comes up when it would have been just as good to have the characters talking without any distractions. The score itself is nice, it's just not used right.

If you can forget about the "Hollywood" in the film, and think of the true events, you will probably be touched by the story.

Synopsis:
As a roving gambler, Russel Donovan had a pretty good life. The only thing he had to worry about were incompetent thieves like Amos and Theodore trying to rob him. However, everything changes when he is conned into taking custody of three young orphans � Celia, Bobby, and Clovis. Donovan is desperate to get rid of the kids, but nobody will take them. No longer a carefree bachelor, he reluctantly takes responsibility for the kids. Eventually, though, he begins to like the idea of being a dad.

The children also happen to own rights to a nearby abandoned gold mine. When an earthquake reveals a massive gold nugget in the mine, Donovan and the kids find themselves rich beyond their wildest dreams. Unfortunately, that is the real beginning of their problems. Now everyone in the town wants to adopt the kids and they challenge Donovan in court for their custody. Amos and Theodore also make several unsuccessful attempts to steal the nugget.

Seeing the nugget as the source of their problems, the children conspire with Amos and Theodore to help them steal the nugget, thus the Apple Dumpling Gang is formed. Maybe with the gold nugget out of the picture the kids can stay with Donovan. But what will the makeshift gang do when a real gang of thieves comes to town to steal the gold?

The Movie:
Getting �The Apple Dumpling Gang� on DVD was quite a nostalgic treat. I remember seeing it a lot as a kid and thoroughly enjoying it. Now, watching it again as an adult with my kids, it�s still a fun movie. Amazingly, the humor in it still stands up over time.

Don Knotts and Tim Conway, of course, are the highlights of the film. These two comedy legends are in top form together and they provide most of the laughs. Most of their humor is physical comedy including stunts with a ladder, a mule, and even fire. Knotts� looks of surprise or rage are hilarious and Conway�s moronic character is the perfect contrast to his partner. It�s worth checking out the film again just for their performances.

The rest of the cast is also wonderful. It�s great to see Bill Bixby again not Hulking out. It�s kind of funny, but young Bixby reminds me a lot of Hugh Jackman. Anyway, he�s supported by Harry Morgan, Slim Pickens, and some other character actors who you�ll recognize. The children are also excellent as angels with crooked halos. The little girl (with the bladder problem) is the main one to steal the show, though.

Overall, seeing this movie was a wonderful treat and a welcome addition to my kid�s DVD collection. Watch out for the theme song sticking in your head, though.

The Extras:
Disney continues to do a fantastic job of rolling out their old movies in a great new package. The film is supplemented with a great selection of extras that enhance the movie viewing experience:

Commentary by Susan Clark, Tim Conway, Don Knotts, and Brad Savage � The commentary sounds like it was recorded in two separate sessions � one with Knotts and Conway, the other with Savage (one of the grown up kids) and Clark. Of course, Conway and Kotts� commentary is the most fun. Conway provides most of the funny comments as they watch their work in the movie. Their stuff is really the highlight of the commentary. Clark�s commentary is more analytical about the plot and themes, though she does get into detail about filming. Savage�s commentary isn�t quite as polished. He�ll frequently ask a question which Clark just gave the answer to moments before. All in all, though, it�s an interesting extra worth listening to.

"A Look Back With The Gang" � This is a great look at the making of the film with the surviving cast. It�s pretty fun to see the children all grown up. Don Knotts and Tim Conway also sit together for the interview. They have great stories from the set and talk about all the fun they had filming the movie.

Conversations With Tim Conway � This is a 10-minute video where Tim Conway talks about his life and his experiences making Disney movies. His stories about working with animals on the films are hilarious. It really made me realize how much fun it would be to see him in some new features. This is the most entertaining extra on the DVD.

"Disney's Rootin' Tootin' Cowboy Heroes" � This is just a montage of cowboy clips from Disney�s cartoons and live action features. The theme from the Apple Dumpling Gang plays as they are shown.

Classic Disney Cartoon - Two Gun Goofy � This old Goofy cartoon is added as an extra. It�s not really related to the Apple Dumpling Gang, but it�s fun to watch.

Lost Treasures: "The Disney Back Lot" � This is a short documentary on the history of the Disney backlot. They talk about how the sets were changed over the years and how they were re-dressed multiple times for various features. Sadly, most of the sets are gone now and paved over with parking lots or office buildings, but it�s interesting to see how they used all the same buildings as different exotic locations to great effect.

The Bottom Line:
The Apple Dumpling Gang is great fun and a perfect addition to your children�s collection. It�s fun for both kids and adults to watch. Disney aficionados should also be well pleased with the DVD presentation.

They do not travel on horses, but pretend they do and have their servants bang coconuts to make the sound of horse's hooves. Through satire of certain events in history (witch trials, the black plague) they find Camelot, but after literally a quick song and dance they decide that they do not want to go there. While walking away, God (who seems to be grumpy) come to them from a cloud and tells them to find the Holy Grail. They agree and begin their search. While they search for the Grail, scenes of the knight's tales appear and why they have the name they have. Throughout their search they meet interesting people and knights along the way. Most of the characters die; some through a killer rabbit (which they defeat with the holy hand grenade), others from not answering a question right from the bridge of Death, or die some other ridiculous way. In the end, King Arthur and Sir Bedevere are left and find the Castle Arrrghhh where the Holy Grail is. They are met by some French soldiers who taunted them earlier in the film, so they were not able to get into the castle.

Freddy Vs. Jason opens at Camp Crystal Lake with Freddy and Jason both buried: Jason's buried underground and Freddy's trapped in hell, sent there by the angry spirits of the child killer�s victims, as a tidal wave of flashbacks blow across the screen, startling even the two villains. Then Jason appears, standing on the bloodstained grounds of Camp Crystal Lake where he too begins to be haunted by the ghosts and voices of his past victims. It's then that a very special ghost appears in front of Jason: his beloved, and long dead mother, Pamela Voorhees, the demented madwoman whose murderous rampage in the original Friday the 13th film began everything, in more ways than one. She instructs Jason to go to a certain place and a certain street to kill in her name, but it's all a trick by Freddy, who's pretending to be Jason's mother, luring Jason to kill the residents of Freddy�s old stomping grounds, the sleepy town of Springwood, to give the jaded teenagers something they haven�t experienced in almost ten years: Nightmares. The kinds of nightmares that will give a weakened Freddy the strength to regain his mantle as horror's number one anti-hero. When Jason learns of the deception, he's not very happy to say the least, and an epic battle is set into motion.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Five years after Spyglass partner Roger Birnbaum and Disney first engaged Douglas Adams and his "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," Spyglass has set British commercial and video directing and producing team Hammer & Tongs to make its feature directing debut.
The team is writer-director Garth Jennings and producer Nick Goldsmith, and they will work with "Chicken Run" scribe Karey Kirkpatrick, who did a polish on a script written by the author. Spyglass is budgeting the film and will soon set a start date.

Disney has first crack at thumbing a ride on the "Hitchhiker" package as domestic distributor, since the Mouse House was involved in the original purchase.

"We finally cracked the story, and hired these clever English fellows to make sure that the picture is visually inventive and funny and accessible to contemporary audiences while still connected to the book Douglas wrote almost 25 years ago," Birnbaum said.

He first bought the book when he ran Caravan. He, partner Gary Barber and Spyglass' Jonathan Glickman will produce along with Goldsmith, Jay Roach (who once developed the pic to direct) and Robby Stamp, who was Adams' partner.

Adams, who passed away nearly two years ago, will have a posthumous exec producer credit. Spyglass' Derek Evans, who originally found the book, will also be exec producer.

Adams' book revolved around Arthur Dent, who one day is whisked away by an alien doing research to write "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Dent becomes an intergalactic traveler, which sounds cool until he learns that Earth is about to be flattened to make way for an intergalactic bypass and that aliens want his brain.

John Malkovich has signed to star in the comedy "Color Me Kubrick," the true story of a man who conned his way into London's high life by pretending to be reclusive director Stanley Kubrick, according to Hamburg's Film Board, the financier backing the picture. The script for "Kubrick" will come from the late director's longtime personal assistant, Anthony Frewin. Brian Cook, a Kubrick crew member on "Eyes Wide Shut," will direct the feature, which Studio Hamburg is producing. Billed as a cinema verite laffer, "Color Me Kubrick" is based on real-life events during the shooting of "Eyes Wide Shut" in London from 1998-99, when a man pretending to be the legendary director got into many of the city's most exclusive parties, restaurants and nightclubs. Playing on his willing victims' star-struck desire to believe, he was successful despite bearing no resemblance to Kubrick. Hamburg's Film Board will co-finance the low-budget feature to the tune of �900,000 ($1.1 million). Malkovich is repped by WMA. (Scott Roxborough)
